A Yukan revival

There are eighteen surviving books in Niels Meyn’s surreal Yukan series, which have a huge potential to be translated into the English language, helped by the titular antihero who’s essentially the Amazon jungle-based Nordic equivalent of DC’s Batman. There is a high chance that, when all eighteen become PD in much of the world, their future English versions will instead partly come from the superior Swedish translations rather than from the unremarkable originals, which are in Danish. The rest will be relatively Woolseyfied to various degrees, mostly due to the fact that Niels Meyn himself was a dude as uncomfortably values dissonant as H.P. Lovecraft. Even his German counterpart Gerhardt Hauptmann (who also was his spiritual predecessor in some ways) and the already screwed up Edgar Rice Burroughs would’ve run away fast from that terror as well. 

Although a definitive translation into English is still increasingly possible, there are only a few significant changes coming into the series’ writing as usual, whereas the rest are rather minor. Because of how values dissonant the series’ own creator was, it’s daring to think that it’s perhaps waiting to become public domain in almost all nations, bar Guatemala, Spain and Mexico! When it’s going to be reasonably translated (for adults) into Australian English as ‘the Old School Potboiler Edition’, (since it’s initially aimed at Nordic Silent Generation schoolboys after all) the original writing will be carefully labelled as ‘a series of Nordic pulps containing various kinds of values dissonance; including disgusting mistreatment of various peoples as usual’ (read: in terms of indigenous people’s sad mistreatment, the Nordic nations are just as bad as, if not worse than Canada.). 

In hindsight, a moderately rewritten yet much more fantasy-oriented edition of what’ll become the first eighteen volumes will instead be something much better than the original writing (of them all) at any cost. By 2028, the final two books of the original series will be published in six languages all at the same time. In 2029-2032, an even more plausible sequel series (read: it is ten books long) will technically be written first in Estonian, Finnish and Australian English, rather than in all three official Nordic Germanic languages. 

The sequels focus on him and his wife becoming the middle-aged parents of a girl named Mayumi!

Tarzan in Hispanic and Philippine Musicals

Tarzan as a character has clearly appeared in numerous Spanish speaking musicals, with some being based on either the Weissmuller films, the Disney film or the Broadway musical.  The most popular Tarzan musical in Spain is simply called Tarzan: The Musical, which in fact is a Castilian Spanish folk-jazz fest based on both the Disney instalments and Johnny Weissmuller films, as indicated by the addition of Tamara Agudo voicing a puppet for the ever-infamous Cheeta the chimp! It’s rather distinct in that Guillermo Pareja played its own bearded Tarzan, who is the orphaned son of enterprising castaways Mr and Mrs Smith. Here come the Robots!

The certainty that Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine began life with of all things - a classy Tetsujin 28 competitor - is a frankly unknown curio amongst super robot fans outside Japan. Amongst his works besides Kuro Obi Kun and the less popular Tokyo Tarzan, No. 13 Take Off is a creation of Yoshiteru Takano, an unsung manga author turned camera store pioneer.  Despite its more hokey design, it’s much unlike the remote controlled and ugly-cute Tetsujin 28, who likely has the interesting title of being ‘the first robot character of what’s now considered the unlikely but true first Mon-themed work ever’. Although indirectly inspired by Manoel Messias de Mello’s Audaz the Demolisher, the first piloted non-American super robot with its own eponymous comic, Ken Ishikawa’s Getter Robos have more famous exploits.
