Tarzan Design Chart: The Adams Clade

A mild compromise between canonicity, attractiveness and pop cultural impact is why the mighty Adams clade of Tarzan design portfolios has more talent than is usual in terms of styles. Then again, Russ Manning himself was also a talent on par with and equal to the two lifelong friends Joe Kubert and Neal Adams.  

Neal Adams’ Tarzan design portfolio was inspired by Rex Maxon, Hal Foster, John ‘Jack’ Lehti, Sal and John Buscema, Dan and Sy Barry, Chiaki Fuji, Hideko Mizuno, Ruben Moreira, Reed Crandall, Francisco V. Coching, Joe Kubert, Morihiko Ishikawa, Gray Morrow and Shotaro Ishinomori. Actors Lamont Johnson, Lance Henriksen, Harrison Ford and Jock Mahoney, former footballer Mike Henry and the late action star Peter Duel were its live action influences, so are bodybuilder Frank Zane and Robert Ridgely. His Jane Porter design Portfolio was influenced by Susan Oliver, Joyce Mackenzie, Goldie Hawn, Pepita Flores, Marina Vlady and Mia Farrow, while his La of Opar design was influenced by Vanessa Brown and Lauren Hutton. His Korak design was inspired by Michael Keaton and Peter Reckell, while his Jeanne Meriem Jacot design was influenced by Olivia Hussey, Susan Dey, Pepita Flores, Marina Vlady, Dany Carrel and Pam Grier. 

Joe Kubert’s flexible but moody and somber Tarzan design portfolio was inspired largely by fellow artists Dale Messick, William Juhre, Nell Brinkley, John Lehti, Chiaki Fuji, Hideko Mizuno, Ruben Moreira, Burne Hogarth, Frank Frazetta, Morihiko Ishikawa, Hal Foster, the artist himself, Francisco V. Coching, Russ Manning, Shotaro Ishinomori, Roy Krenkel, Rex Maxon, Reed Crandall and (more likely) Alex Raymond. Also influencing the design were the artist himself and fellow actors Michael Keaton, Johnny Weissmuller, Peter Lupus, Robert Ridgely, Gary Collins, Tony Goldwyn, Peter Reckell, Jock Mahoney, Ron Ely, Harrison Ford, Lance Henriksen, Frank Merrill, Herman Brix and Lex Barker. Actresses Madeline Smith, Susan Oliver, Marina Vlady, Natalie Kingston, Pepita Flores, Goldie Hawn and Enid Markey once again made an impact on his lovely Jane Porter design portfolio, while his Hazel Strong design was influenced by Claudia Rivelli and Leslie Ann Warren. Whereas Suzi Parker, Beata Tyszkiewicz, Lee Merriweather and Diahann Carroll inspired his well mannered and surprisingly sympathetic La of Opar design portfolio. His, Frank Thorne and Joe Orlando’s strong willed Korak design portfolio was influenced primarily by teen idols Bobby Sherman, Bruce Reitherman, Michael Keaton and Dirk Benedict, while their moody but lovely Jeanne Meriem Jacot design portfolio was inspired by Olivia Hussey, Susan Dey and Karla Schramm once more. His Alice Clayton design was inspired by Jennifer Howard, Lee Merriweather and Claudia Cardinale, while his John Clayton Senior design was inspired by actors Gordon Pinsent, Donald Sutherland and Kirk Douglas once again. 

Franc Reyes’ Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Joe Kubert, Francisco V. Coching, Frank Frazetta and Russ Manning. Actors Gary Collins and Lance Henriksen inspired his Tarzan designs. 

Rudy Florese’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Joe Kubert, Shotaro Ishinomori, Hideko Mizuno, Russ Manning and Francisco Coching. Actors Gary Collins, Peter Lupus and Lance Henriksen inspired his Tarzan design while Michael Keaton and Peter Reckell have made an impact on his Korak portfolio. 

Alex Niño’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Chiaki Fuji, Osamu Dezaki, Hideko Mizuno, Akio Sugino, Francisco V. Coching, Burne Hogarth and Hal Foster. Actors Peter Duel, Lamont Johnson, Ron Ely and Gary Collins were amongst its live action influences. His Korak design was influenced by Bruce Reitherman, Hideki Saijo and Michael Keaton.

Rick Hoberg’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Bill Finger, Nick Cardy, Burne Hogarth and Russ Manning. 

Dave Stevens’ Tarzan design portfolio was inspired by Russ Manning, Tarpé Mills, Francisco Coching, Alex Niño, Joe Kubert, Neal Adams and Milt Kahl. Gary Collins, Peter Lupus and Ron Ely inspired his Tarzan design.

Mike Grell’s equally moody, but more colourful Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by artists Edd Cartier, Joe Kubert, Chiaki Fuji, Tarpé Mills, Jesse Marsh, Russ Manning, John Celardo, Burne Hogarth and Harry Habblitz. Lance Henriksen and Harrison Ford were the models for it. Also influencing the design were the infamous actor Jock Mahoney and his spiritual successor Joe Lara. Veronica Castro, Diahann Carroll and Olga Breeskin have influenced his mysterious La of Opar design. His Jane Porter design however, is influenced in turn by actresses Mirtha Legrand, Jennifer Beals and Andie MacDowell. His grownup Korak design is inspired by Robby Benson, Eric Stoltz and Michael Keaton, while Beatrice Dalle, Minnie Driver, Lena Horne and Andie McDowell once again made an impact on his gorgeous Jeanne Meriem Jacot design. 

Thomas Yeates’ Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by artists Rudy Florese, Joe Kubert, Bill Finger, Hideko Mizuno, Chiaki Fuji, Neal Adams, Jackie Ormes, Hal Foster, Burne Hogarth, Russ Manning, Franc Reyes, John Celardo and Bob Lubbers. Christopher Lambert, Horst Buchholz, Lamont Johnson, James Drury, Joe Lara, Herman Brix and the infamous Jock Mahoney were amongst the actors who made an impact on it as well. His La of Opar design portfolio is influenced by model Kristen McMenamy, actresses Shuko Akune and Jennifer Beals, with singer-songwriter Taylor Dayne into the mix, whereas his Jane Porter design is inspired primarily by actresses Lydie Denier, Khrystyne Haje, Pepita Flores, Marina Vlady, Jennifer Beals, Andie MacDowell, Brenda Joyce and Joanna Barnes. His Korak design is influenced by model Markus Schenkenberg and actor James Marsters, while his Jeanne Meriem Jacot design is inspired by actresses Susan Dey and Joyce Mackenzie.

Fedo Fiala’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Shotaro Ishinomori, Bo Hampton, Neal Adams, Andre Cheret, Russ Manning, Morihiko Ishikawa, Peter Chung, Jeff Jones and Joe Kubert. Casper Van Dien, Wolf Larson, Matt Cedeño and Tony Goldwyn inspired his Tarzan design while Joanna Barnes, Minnie Driver, Bo Derek, Andie MacDowell and Christie Brinkley have made an impact on his Jane Porter Design. 

Mark Schultz’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Russ Manning, Chiaki Fujii, Frank Frazetta and Roy Krenkel. Actors Steve Sandor, Steven Hill, Casper Van Dien, Denny Miller, Matt Cedeño, Peter Lupus, Tony Goldwyn, Miles O’Keeffe and sports icon Tony Hawk have inspired his Tarzan designs. 

Lee Weeks’ manly cute Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Paul Norris, Franc Reyes, Ruth Atkinson, Rick Hoberg, Alex Niño, Frank Frazetta, Russ Manning, Joe Kubert, Jack Lehti, Rudy Florese and Neal Adams. Actors Charles Bronson, John Gavin, Miles O’Keeffe, Peter Andre, James Drury, Franco Dani, Jock Mahoney, Rick Mora, Franco Gasparri, Tony Goldwyn, Alessandro Gassman, Peter Lupus, Wolf Larson and Ron Ely have long inspired his Tarzan designs. Pepita Flores, Minnie Driver, Andie McDowell, Marina Vlady and Susan Oliver inspired his Jane Porter designs. 

Frank Cho’s Tarzan design portfolio is inspired by Morihiko Ishikawa, Peter Chung, Dave Hoover, Shotaro Ishinomori, Joe Kubert, Frank Frazetta, Neal Adams and Thomas Yeates.
